New Jersey made baking from home for profit legal in October 2019. The State Department of Health published a set of rules and regulations that allows bakers and confectioners to apply for a permit to run a "cottage food" business from their home kitchens. These rules & regulations required to obtain a Cottage Food Operator Permit allow home bakers to operate a small business while instituting the appropriate safeguards.
Sourdough is naturally leavened bread which means that it does not contain commercial yeast. Instead of yeast it uses a "starter" (aka Thelma) which is fermented flour and water that contains natural yeast and good bacteria. This starter is what produces that tangy/sour flavor and slightly chewy texture.
Most of our breads contain Thelma (our sourdough starter) as well as some of our other baked goods. Thelma can be used active or in-active (known as sourdough discard). When in-active (discard) is used in a recipe yeast is also added to help with rise.
Our breads are stored best at room temperature in their original packaging and will keep fresh for up to 2 days. If you plan to keep for longer than 2 days we recommend pre-slicing and freezing in a freezer safe bag or container. Warm when ready to eat (toasted with butter is our favorite). Our other baked goods are best consumed within 2 days and stored at room temperate in an air tight bag/container - freezing is also an option and can be warmed when ready to eat. Our packaged cookies will stay fresh up to a week (7 days) when stored in an air tight container and kept at room temperature.
Since we are a home based bakery our products are made in the same kitchen with the same equipment that processes dairy, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, wheat and a variety of other potential allergens. There is always a risk for cross-contamination. Please note that kids (👶🏼🍼🐶)and a husband (😂) also reside in this cottage home!
Because our items are made to order and the sourdough process takes roughly 30 hours we have a strict 48 hour cancellations policy. If your order is cancelled 48 hours prior to your pick-up/delivery time slot you will receive a full refund, after 48 hours all monies are non-refundable.
Unfortunately, New Jersey Cottage Law does not allow shipping of food products at this time. We do offer a selection of curated non-food items available for shipping!
When placing your order you will select your pick-up date/timeframe. Please arrive during your confirmed time slot as we bake everything fresh to order. If you are unable to pick-up during your time slot your order will be held for 24 hours. After 24 hours your order will be discarded and all monies will be forfeited. We understand that life happens, please reach out and we will work with you to the best of our ability.
At this time we are not delivering, however larger or custom orders can be delivered for an additional fee.
Porch Pop Ups will happen randomly when we have extra product or extra time to bake - please follow us on our Facebook @sourdouchbcnj to keep updated!
We have complete confidence in the quality of our products and firmly believe that you will be more than delighted with your purchase. However, we understand that sometimes things may not go as planned and there might be an issue. We will gladly provide you with a replacement at our earliest convenience.
We strive to sell only the highest quality product. We price our items according to the cost of our ingredients, maintenance of equipment, overhead, and the labor it takes to produce them. All of our items use the highest quality ingredients, and can take upwards of 3 days from start to the finished product. We have also done a comparable market analysis and are in range with other local bakery’s.
We truly appreciate each and every one of our customers and realize that without them we would not be able to do what we love! Thank you for your continued support!
